quick political

O.K., so it's not a surprise—in fact it's pretty damned predictable—but it's still a stunning low: when Gen. Powell endorses Sen. Obama in the last weeks of the election, the conservative response is ... oh, go ahead, guess!

"It doesn't count because they're both black!"

[In case anyone's inclined to say, "Drudge is quoting him saying it isn't about race," let me just be all explicit here and lay it out: its not being about race was not central to Powell's endorsement; therefore, its being the focus of Drudge's headline means it's central to Drudge.  (Everyone else's headline is "Powell Endorses Obama"; Drudge's headline is basically "Powell Denies That He's Just Excited to Vote for a Brother.")  Meanwhile, the headline is basically an example of that classic Greek rhetorical device, I forget what it's called: the one where you say, "I'm not going to mention my opponent's history of sexual molestation."  My point here isn't that Matt Drudge is himself a racist; it's that he, along with G.O.P. strategists for decades,* is way too ready to use racism for political ends.]

Two other top Drudge Report headlines right now:

"Limbaugh: Where are the inexperienced, white liberals Powell has endorsed?"

"FLASHBACK: Powell Told students an African-American president would be 'electrifying'..." [random capitalization sic]

I'm gratified by the G.O.P.'s desperation and gratified to see the mask slip, but all I can say is that if McCain ends up winning after waging campaign this nasty, this slimy, this all but flat-out openly pandering to racists and bigots, then it's going to be a dark, dark 2009 21st century.

Alt85 will return before you know it.

* Here's how you know this is a fact and not just liberal propaganda: because the G.O.P. apologized for it.  And look at the Bush administration: these guys aren't known for apologizing for things, even when they're caught red-handed.
